Highgate Cemetery - Weekend walks
Sunday, September 19, 2010 at 9:50PM I feel so privileged to live in such an amazing city. London night-life is varied and abundant, but it is easy to spend a small fortune on entertainment and so I have been trying to be more creative with my days and evenings out. Two weeks ago I visited Highgate Cemetery. It was my second visit and I still haven't been on the tour of the West Cemetery, which I hope to go on next time. I found the East Cemetery peaceful, beautiful and very photogenic. It reminded me of the other Victorian cemetery I've been to, the Glasgow Necropolis.

There are many famous interments at the cemetery including Karl Marx and his family. This is a great afternoon outing, which will leave you with change from a fiver!

Last Sunday I went out for another lovely walk. Muswell Hill is close-by enough to visit on an afternoon, but is also so close that it sometimes gets overlooked. So I made a point of going there, with the idea of looking at some cute shops and having a tree-lined walk. I was not disappointed! Amongst the chintzy finds I stumbled across in the shops were sweet tea cups and saucers from Pip Studio. The bird design ones are so pretty, I found it hard to walk out of the shop with a pair! However, I tried to focus my attention on the beauty in the suburban landscape (rather than in material goods) and took some photos to share.
What a fabulous view - from this point at the top of the hill, you can see Canary Wharf and the Olympic site.

My afternoon ended on a high. I walked along Parkland Walk - a 4.5 mile green walkway, which goes from Finsbury park to Alexander Palace. I was amazed to see that it went on for so long, and wondered how it could have come to be, and why also I had never heard of it before?! I discovered at the end of my walk, that it is an old railway route. I think it must be a well-kept secret, as most of the people there were local joggers, family groups and teenagers, even though it was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1990.
There are more fantastic views from here, as the railway was elevated.
This one is a bit blurry, but you can still see how beautiful it is.
