What is the difference between coaching and counselling?

The main difference between coaching and counselling is that coaching is forward looking and focuses on moving towards a brighter and better future. Coaching is solutions-focused, with the aim of changing one's way of thinking for the better. It is a generative, dynamic and interactive process. A coach will ask questions, take you through processes and engage with you, with the aim of taking you from where you are to where you want to go. Coaching is about increasing choices for another person.

With counselling, the aim can be to 'get it out of the system' by talking and expressing the feelings, words and emotions which may have become trapped inside a person. The counsellor's role is to listen and create a safe space for you to off-load. This process is more about losing one's 'baggage' and is an important part of the journey for some people.

You may feel that you had said all there is to say, you have cried your tears, and just want to move on. If this is the case, coaching is for you.

What happens in a coaching session?

This all depends on what you want to work on as every client has different aims, goals and needs, but most sesions will include lots of talking, some laughter and maybe even a few tears! There are structured processes we can use, which might include standing up and moving, and sometimes it is better for us to be seated comfortably, with our eyes closed. Sessions usually take place in a mutually convenient meeting place, but they could involve going soemwhere together, or being outdoors. It all depends on the individual and what would help them to make the changes they desire.

'Zeenat created a climate of trust which put me at ease immediately, giving me the confidence to talk about my issues. Her openness and calm approach really made it easy to think through a variety of solutions which would help me.' J Hinckley, Languages Teacher

Where do the coaching sessions take place?

It is important that you feel comfortable and are able to talk freely during the sessions. For this reason, I can either visit you at your home, or we can meet in a Central London venue. I conduct some of my sessions at Quantum House in Euston (5 minutes from Euston Station). Alternatively we can discuss other places to meet.

Can I have coaching sessions over the phone?

It depends. Coaching on the telephone or Skype is possible and even preferable for some sessions, although it is great to work face-to-face, especially at the early stage of the coaching relationship. It can make it easier to build a trusting relationship. Interim and follow-up meetings can be held over the phone or Skype. It works very well for some work.

How many coaching sessions will I need?

It depends on what you want to work on. Most clients start to notice changes even after the first session, and some report profound changes in the way they are thinking or feeling about a situation very soon after starting their coaching sessions. If you are looking to work on a specific issue, you may need fewer sessions, but we will be able to establish this once we talk.

'Two sessions into my life coaching... I experienced a very profound shift in my confusion and became very clear what it was that I needed to happen to make me happier with my future.' Caroline Lovatt, property developer

The idea is to work with you, supporting you in any way I can, and to equip you with the skills that you need to be able to face future challenges independently. I do have a range of packages too, which could be suitable for you.

What will I get for my money?

The hourly charges for individual coaching are set because of the one-to-one tailored support offered to each client. If you are interested in coaching, but the charges are putting you off, I would say that it is the best investment you will ever make. For the cost of going out for dinner, buying shoes or a new haircut, you can improve the way you think and feel forever.

In addition to our hourly sessions, I will send you follow-up emails to check on your progress. Some clients also like to book interim telephone sessions, when there are long gaps between sessions.

I have never done anything like this before and am a bit nervous. What can I expect?

You will have a free telephone consultation before we begin our work together, so I can gather some more information, and you can ask me any questions you may have. Hopefully this conversation will answer any queries and leave you looking forward to us working together. Please note that all sessions are strictly confidential and I adhere to the code of conduct set out by the Association of NLP. I also have an enhanced disclosure (full CRB check). Embrace Coaching is fuly covered by professional indemnity insurance.
